Lagos
State Electricity Board: Ikeja

The
House of Assembly of the Lagos State of Nigeria
established the Lagos State Electricity Board on
the 5th of July, 1980 as stated in the Official
gazatte number 53 Volume 13, to provide the following
function:-
- Generate,
transmit, distribute and extend electricity
within the State.
- Construct
electricity supply network for all State Government
Projects.
- Construct
Street Lighting Installation for States and
Local Governments in
the State
- Manage,
Control, maintain and charge rates on such systems
as in (i) above.
Since the inception of the present democratic
government, Lagos State Electricity Board has
completed 2 new street light projects and rehabilitated
4 existing street light installations.
A very important aspect of the electricity distribution
network at Lekki Peninsula Scheme involving the
installation of 4 Ring Mains Units (RMU) was also
done by the Board within one week, thereby facilitating
the commissioning of part of the electrical network
of the Scheme. All these were made possible by
the goodwill of the Executive Governor of the
State. This is significant when compared to
the same period in the previous year when only
one Street light project was executed.
It is hoped that the near future will witness
a lot more economic activities that will further
manifest the economic viability of the State.
Operation Light Up Lagos is a programme the Board
has worked out to ensure that street lights in
the state are kept functioning. It is hoped that
at least 2 street light installations per Local
Government are embarked upon, this amount to 40
installations per year to start with.
Private Sector Participation in the Electrification
of Lekki Peninsula Scheme Management and Control
of electricity supply infrastructure in Nigeria
has been
a subject of debate for the past few years. The
proposal has been made to make Lagos State Electricity
Board a Power Utility Company where investors
can go into joint venture participation with the
State Government through the Private Sector Participation
(PSP) initiative.
The
completion of the internal reticulation of the
first phase of the Scheme is still being considered.
Discussions are still in progress with respect
to the reticulation of the second phase and subsequent
phases of the scheme. This is where Private Secot
Participation is necessary. It is intended that
the ENRON project apart from supplying power to
the NEPA distribution system will be extended
to handle the Lekki Project thereby giving Electricity
Board its full expression.
