PUBLIC WORKS CORPORATION.
The historic perspective of Public Works Corporation could be traced down to 1980, during the Civilian Regime of Alhaji Lateef Jakande who established the Lagos State Works Management Board by an edict dated Law No.2 of 5 th January 1980.
It should be noted that while it operated as a Board/Corporation it had a constituted board with a Chairman and the Chief Executive being the General Manager and a Secretary.
Similarly the board operated till December 1983 until a change in the administration of the Federal Government. In January 1984 it became Lagos State Public Works Corporation, it later metamorphosed in 1996 to Lagos State Direct Labour Agency till June 1999.
As an Agency, it operated as an Extra-Ministerial office under the Governor’s office and was fully subvented by the State Government. It was an opportunity to show case the skills of Nigerian Engineers in Lagos State, especially in road rehabilitation, maintenance and construction. During this period, the Agency acquired the biggest Asphalt Marini plant in West Africa with the capacity to produce 300 metric tons of Asphalt per hour.
With the inception of the present democratic Government of ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU, realizing the critical and crucial role of smooth and motor able roads inclusive of its influence on the life of Nigerians within and outside the State, reformed and renamed it Public Works Bureau in July 1999, where it remained as an extra-Ministerial Office under the Governor’s Office, but for ease of administration it was supervised by the Honourable Commissioner for Works. It has a General Manager initially at the helm of affairs; which was later replaced with the status of Permanent Secretary. The Ministerial responsibility was rehabilitation and Maintenance of Lagos Roads.
The name and status was again changed in February 2003 to Public Works Corporation as a Parastatal with a General Manager at the helm of affairs now under the office of Infrastructure. It has (5) five Departments and (2) two units with a total strength of 264 officers comprising of Junior, Senior and Management Staff. It should be stated here in that Public Works Corporation came in as a response to the genuine aspiration of the Government to meet the growing need of the teeming populace in ensuring safe and smooth motoring on the roads within the state.
It is note worthy to add that a total number of about 893 roads had been rehabilitated between 1999 till date.
The vision therefore is to be a formidable name in Road Rehabilitation and Construction while the mission statement is to be primarily responsible for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of all roads such that roads remain motor able all year round by responding promptly to all situations this is to be accomplished at a minimal cost, while not compromising quality and efficiency.
