Lagos
State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is one of the pioneer Ministries
at the creation of 12 States in 1967. It was formed
from the Lagos Executive Development Board (LEDB)
and the Ikeja Area Planning Authority (IAPA). These
two organizations were fused together and metamorphosed
into Lagos State Ministry of Works and Planning
(as it was initially called) and the Lagos State
Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC).
It
is necessary as a matter of historical fact to
mention that it was from the former Lagos State
Ministry of Works and Planning that the Ministry
of Environment and Physical Planning was carved
out in 1979 the development that changed the name
of the Ministry to the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The Ministry of Transportation was also created
from the Ministry of Works and Transport in 1992
to cater for the growing need of proper traffic
monitoring and control in the State, especially,
when the metro line system of transportation was
being proposed. The Ministry was then left simply
as the Ministry of Works.
The most recent Ministry to be created out of
the Ministry of Works is Ministry of housing.
It came into being in 1999 at the inception of
the new civilian and administration basically
to formulate, coordinate and implement its housing
policy and programmes for the citizens of the
State. Thus, the Ministry boast of having produced
three other Ministries, Viz:-
1. Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning
2. Ministry of Transportation
3. Ministry of Housing
Apart from the aforementioned off-shoots of the
Ministry, there are other Government Parastatals
(Agencies) which were created from it; viz:-
1. The Lagos State Public Works Bureau that was
established in 1979.
2. The Electricity Board in 1979.
3. The Eko Ventures in 1988.
It
is however crystal clear that the Ministry of
Works and Infrastructure has grown beyond any other Ministry in the
Lagos State Government set-up and is undoubtedly,
the training ground of experts and seasoned professionals
for other related Ministries and Parastatals especially
to those that were created from it between 1967
to date.
The
Ministry has been structured to meet up with the
goals and aspirations of the State, experienced
professionals of various disciplines abound for
efficient performance in project execution, consultancy
services and training to other Ministries. The
frame structure of the Ministry was fashioned
along the line of the report of Ayida's Committee
on the Civil Service which enabled the provision
of the following departments:
1. Finance and Administration
2. Architectural
3. Civil Engineering
4. Mechanical Engineering
5. Electrical Engineering
6. Public Building
7. Quantity Surveying
Each department contributes its quota towards
the enviable development of the Ministry and the
State in general.
